Sticklac
“Sticklac comes primarily from Indonesia and Thailand. It is the product of a shield louse and its subspecies. These insects attach themselves to the young, succulent shoots of various plants and suck out the juice of the plants. This plant juice is transformed in the animals’ bodies into a resin-like compound and is then constantly exuded until it gradually hardens into a crust.” – Excerpt from VIOLIN VARNISHES by Josef and Reiner Hammerl, page 26. More information about sticklac, its properties and use can be found in this book.
